It's been a hectic and significant week for me.
It got me to contemplate what happiness and physical health really mean—not only for me, but also for other people, like the students.
My responsibility is to make sure that the students are well cared for and educated.
My ability to provide that is limited if I'm sick or otherwise contagious.
The second realisation is that I must take greater initiative to ensure the welfare of my students.
That is how, long after most other schools had already made the decision, I ultimately decided to restrict the use of mobile phones in school.
The effects on health are really serious.
A key paper from Kings College regarding the negative effects of mobile phones was released on the Friday that I made my decision public.
Depression, low self-esteem, poor interpersonal relationships, an unrealistic view of the world, and significant time spent away from friends, family, schoolwork, and daily life in general were all mentioned.
The paper discussed smartphone addiction, which is just as harmful as some of the other addictions.
The prevalence of mental health concerns will skyrocket if we don't make this choice.
The number of pupils experiencing mental health issues is already significantly increasing.
I appreciate Ms. Johnson emphasising the value of mindfulness and meditation.
Last year, one of our year 11 students was having trouble in both his academics and his home life.
We now set out particular times during the day for staff and students to practise mindfulness and meditation.
Ms. Johnson is frequently asked to give presentations for other schools.
So... it is not quite the time for new year resolutions but I am already prioritising well-being of students and staff as the number one action for me.
That also means I need to use my phone less.
