From the Our Lady's Catholic High School
After a protracted dialogue process within the Diocese of Lancaster, which saw the reduction of the five Catholic secondary schools from five to three due to declining enrollment, Our Lady's Catholic High School was established in 1988.
St. Edmund Campion in Lea and St. Cuthbert Mayne, which already had a building on the current location of Our Lady's in Fulwood, were the two schools that merged to establish Our Lady's.
The parishes and the ten primary schools that make up our family are very important in defining who we are as a school, and they have made sure that there has been a clear continuation from the two previous high schools.
His first head teacher, Mr. Terence Manbre, who oversaw the school for 18 years until his retirement in 1977, opened it in 1959 as Blessed Edmund Campion (the name was changed to "Saint" in 1970).
The first Catholic priest to be executed as a result of Elizabeth I's policies was St. Cuthbert Mayne. He was born in Youlston, Devon, around 1544.
In 1970, Pope Paul VI canonised him as well.
The Blessed Cuthbert Mayne School, which was renamed Saint in 1970, was established in 1963 under the leadership of Mr. Joseph Connolly, the school's first headmaster. Mr. Connolly holds the distinction of being the only headteacher to oversee the institution for its 25 years.
When he retired and closed the school in 1988, Mr. Peter Winders, the newly appointed Head Teacher of the combined school of Our Lady's, received both a KSG and an OBE for his contributions to education.
Due to the high enrollment during the first two years of Our Lady's, both school locations had to be used.
Mr. Winders served as the school's leader until he retired in 1994, at which point Mr. Anthony Greenall took over as the second head teacher.
Even though a history with a larger scope than this one might detail many interesting aspects of Our Lady's since its beginning, the following significant events deserve mention:
-.
Both OFSTED and the Diocese of Lancaster inspected the school in 2012, and both agencies gave it a "Outstanding" rating across the board.
The school received the designation of National Teaching School in 2014 and is now the lead institution of The Catholic Teaching Alliance (CTA), a grouping of more than 50 Catholic institutions, the majority of which are located in the Lancaster Diocese and which prepare the next generation of Catholic educators.
Serving the Catholic communities of our family of parishes in Preston's north and west requires Our Lady's to be watchful and committed to its ongoing mission.
