The Croydon Council maintains Howard, a two-form community school with 420 students ranging in age from 4 to 11 years.
On April 25, 1898, the main school building, which had been finished in 1897, was formally inaugurated.
As a result, it is among Croydon's oldest school buildings that are still in service.
The school has the name of Lord Howard of Effingham, who previously owned the land on which it is situated (1536–1624).
The school's mascot is an Elizabethan Man of War sailing full sails because Howard served as Lord High Admiral to Queen Elizabeth I during the Spanish Armada.
In 1937, the school hall and former administration building were constructed, and they served as a fire station during World War II.
The Infant Department was located in a sizable home on the site of No. 5, Nottingham Road, from 1951 until 1975. After the structure was declared unsafe, the Infant Department was relocated back inside the main structure.
In 2002, a new, three-story block with three classrooms was added to the school building.
