The rector of St. Mary's Church in Whitechapel, the Reverend Ralph Davenant, drafted a will in February 1680, leaving everything to his wife, with the instruction that it would eventually be sold and the proceeds would be used to construct a school for 40 of the neighborhood's less fortunate lads.
As a result, money was raised for the supplementary education of 34 underprivileged girls.
Davenant underwent a significant transformation in 1813 when it was named the "Cradle of the National Schools of England."
This technique was used to educate 1,000 youngsters (600 males and 400 girls) in a new building constructed at Davenant Street.
The Reverend Welden Champneys, the then-Rector of Whitechapel, oversaw the construction of a Commercial or Grammar School on Leman Street in 1858, which gave rise to the third branch of the institution.
The school changed its name to Davenant Foundation Grammar School for Boys in 1944, and it kept that name up until 1980.
Only 200 boys were being schooled at the time.
On the request of the Essex County Council, the school relocated to the lush neighbourhood of Loughton in 1966.
The population of London was dwindling, and Loughton needed to provide for the needs of boys attending grammar schools.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother officially launched the new structures at Loughton in 1966. They were situated on the outskirts of the town and in an area of open farmland between Loughton and Theydon Bois.
Up until 1980, the school operated as a boys' grammar school with a two-form entry.
In honour of the institution's 300th anniversary, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother paid the school a second visit that year.
The school reverted to co-educational status and expanded to become a 1,000-student Christian Ecumenical School.
On April 1, 2011, the school became an academy, and it has since continued to adjust and transform in order to give every student the finest chances and preserve Ralph Davenant's legacy.
