Five little tin-built schools once served the youngsters of Bow.
In London's East End, Clara Grant is regarded as a pioneer in the field of education.
She was born in Wiltshire in 1876, and from a young age, she dreamed of moving to London to work as a head teacher.
Additionally, she had a strong concern for the severely poor locals in the East End.
She advocated for free milk in schools and served on numerous education select committees.
Clara Grant founded the renowned Fern Street Settlement in 1911.
Clara Grant earned the moniker "The Bundle Woman of Bow" as a result.
Throughout the First World War, Clara Grant continued to labour at the Fern Street Settlement (1914 - 1918).
In this war, 700 men and boys from London's East End participated.
Many Devons School students were sent to Oxford during the Second World War because of the intense bombardment of London.
They found that life in Oxford was considerably different.
They attended Summertown Infants' School, a school.
Clara Grant received an OBE in January 1949 in recognition of her contributions to education.
A few months later, at the age of 82, she passed away.
Even though the Settlement's work has evolved over the years, children and the community remain at the centre of what it does.
The London Borough of Tower Hamlets honoured Clara Grant for all of her efforts in 2014 by erecting a purple Peoples Plaque on the wall outside the Settlement in Fern Street.
In April 1993, the Clara Grant Primary School was given a new name in her honour.
A group of students from the school travelled to Wiltshire in 2011 to collaborate with students from Chapmanslade, Clara Grant's first school.
