The issues that have influenced life in Poplar since the Victorian era are reflected in the history of St. Saviour's. The first structure on Northumbria Street was constructed in 1865 and featured a great Victorian Gothic architecture. It was built to stand tall above the surrounding slums as a symbol of knowledge and development in a famously underdeveloped area. Destroyed by Nazi bombs in the Blitz, the old school was finally demolished and a new building erected in Chrisp Street in the 1950's, some four hundred metres from the original site. At the former location in Bartlett Park, you can still see the remnants of the neighbouring St. Saviour's Church. Visit the British History Online website to learn more about the ancient school's past. We are really fortunate to own some amazing historical artefacts and documentation from the school. Public notices and appeals bear testament to the incredible dedication of men such as R R Dolling, the Parish Priest, to helping raise the living standards of the poor of the area, and these make wonderful reading. The log books track the arrivals and departures of both students and personnel at the school, and a recurring theme is how to provide the neighbourhood families with health and sanitation advice. The diaries also document the sanctions meted out to unfortunate students and the objections of furious parents.
