On June 14th, 1782, Richard Balshaw established a trust for a charitable school in Leyland.
Because most schools in those days charged hefty tuition, he wanted to assist in educating the kids of those who couldn't pay.
On April 11, 1811, over 30 years after opening the institution, he passed away.
Balshaw's underwent numerous changes throughout the following century, including a variety of head teachers, restorations, the addition of additional property to the school's grounds, and sex equality conflicts.
Balshaw's flourished throughout the First World War despite the call-up of 30 boys and instructor Mr. Clements to the front lines of battle.
Balshaw's had 153 students in 1915 who came from 21 different locations; by 1917, that number had increased to 192 students.
The new Balshaw's had its grand opening on June 8, 1932, which was practically the anniversary of the Foundation's founding on June 14, 1782.
The four houses were named after nearby residences, which may be why the griffin—a heraldic animal—became the school's crest.
In schools, senior pupils were recruited as prefects to uphold discipline and ensure the smooth operation of the institution.
The plan was successful, and it is still in use today.
Despite the loss of teaching staff and other challenges, Balshaw's continued to provide education for its students during the whole six-year duration of the Second World War.
After "29 of the best years of his life at Balshaw's," Mr. Oldland retired in 1960.
Prior to the hiring of Mr. Fred Bleasdale in 1961, Mr. R. A. Bennison, a science teacher, served as Head.
Mr. Bleasdale, who played a significant role in Balshaw's history, fought to establish a separate sixth form for the benefit of kids who desired to pursue higher study.
Mr. Paul Ingram was appointed headmaster in 1973 and held the job until Miss Venn took it over in January 1995.
George Birtill wrote a book as part of the bicentennial festivities that told the tale of Balshaw's School's first 200 years.
Before she retired in 2014, Jo Venn requested that this be updated.
Over the course of the previous year, Keith and his wife Ollie have combed through school files and storage areas, collecting images and data from a range of people, including former students and staff.
Church of England High School in Balshaw Keith and Ollie Woodcock put together and edited a different history from 1981 to 2014.
On Saturday, June 14, 2014, at the reunion event for individuals who departed in 1994, the book was officially released.
Keith hopes that the book will be fascinating and enjoyable for everyone who has been associated with the school between 1981 and the present.
It includes information about school life, the building programme, former faculty, and students, as well as memories of specific people and occasions.
This book is available for purchase from School for 5.

Balshaw's Church of England High School Reviews

Both my children attend Balshaws and are thriving. Support is given in any subjects they find difficult. Sports are encouraged and teams celebrated. Any bullying issues are dealt with quickly. PSHE and assemblies address issues teenagers may face...knife crime, relationships, mental health etc in a really good way they can relate to. It can be strict but the rules are mostly fair. My son needs SEN support and this was provided before he even started...
Teachers think it’s the Victorian era and hit children with rulers and ensure you can’t move anywhere during free time by utilising no entries which the teachers ignore. Not following this rule leads to being intoxicated and the teacher threatening your life and the headteacher is supporting this.
