The school became self-governing and granted Grant Maintained status in April 1994. As a result, it began to receive funding directly from the Department for Education. Since becoming Grant Maintained, the school has been pleasantly transformed into a contemporary, classroom-style school, resulting in a highly productive and calm working atmosphere. The school changed its status to Foundation School in 2001 after Grant Maintained Status was abolished. In 1999 a major new building project added a new junior classroom, junior entrance and toilet block, added a new infant classroom, toilets, new infant foyer and a remodelled the east wing. Two new special needs meeting/withdrawal rooms have been recently installed, and remodelling has resulted in the creation of a separate library and music room. The section housing the computer suite has also undergone renovation and modification. Although in an urban area, the school is set in sizeable grounds in which there are three play areas, a large sports field with two football pitches, a five a side pitch, two kwik-cricket all weather surfaces, a mixed centenary environmental woodland, an environmental area which has been allowed to develop naturally, a seated garden area, large chess court and two attractive courtyard garden areas. The play areas to the rear and sides of the school have been security fenced to provide a high level of safety and security for all pupils whilst using the extensive zoned playground areas including adventure play area, climbing walls, sheltered canopy area and an amphitheatre. To prevent injuries while playing, the playground is completely walled and has a safety rubber surface.
