It is essential that kids feel safe and content at school so that learning can proceed effectively in a supportive setting.
The school primarily serves the Widcombe neighbourhood, but it also enrols students from a larger region. The students we accept come from a variety of social, economic, and academic backgrounds.
Currently, 78% of students are White British, 9% are Pupil Premium students, 21% speak English as a second language, and 9% are on the SEN list, including one child with EHCPs.
To ensure that these children are not disadvantaged, our Pupil Premium (extra funding granted for the children eligible for free school meals, children from families receiving services, and for Looked After Children) is used to assist small group work and individual work.
The school has earned the Basic Skills Quality Mark for the high standards and ongoing improvements in basic skills instruction, as well as the Artsmark Gold for the significant weight given to the creative components of the curriculum and the distinctive breadth of opportunities within the creative arts.
The school has received several awards for its efforts in physical education, including the Active Mark, the Director of Public Health Award for Healthy Schools, the Primary Science Quality Mark Silver, the OPAL Platinum Play Award, and the ICT Mark, which recognises the provision of ICT in the classroom and its use.
The school has remained committed to cooperating with other schools since it was encouraged to apply to become a Beacon School a number of years ago.
Many staff members from different schools, both inside and outside the Local Authority, visited Widcombe Infant School last year to observe best practises.
