The school is set in pleasant surroundings and is an interesting mixture of buildings; a converted mansion house, specialist newer buildings and a relatively new Sports Hall. The school governors and staff have consistently pursued school status that reflects their strong belief in self-determination. As a result, West Hill has alternately been maintained by grants, a foundation, and as of August 2011 an academy.
