From the University of Leeds
Everything we do is driven by our values of professionalism, inclusivity, honesty, community, and academic excellence.
Leeds University, an international research-driven institution, aspires to go above and above what is required by law to foster a supportive environment for our diverse staff and student body.
The University puts a lot of effort into advancing gender equality and helping brilliant women advance their careers in traditionally male-dominated sectors like science, engineering, and technology.
Regardless of background, Leeds is committed to hiring the finest and brightest students, and our Reach for Excellence and Access to Leeds (A2L) programmes are essential elements of our Access Agreement and Education Engagement Strategy.
The University has also formulated the fundamental principles listed below to guide our activity in addressing the global climate problem.
We are resolved to take the initiative in mobilising our collective expertise, clout, resources, and community to support the transition to a low-carbon society and lessen our environmental footprint.
The University of Leeds and Leeds University Union together made the commitment to eliminate single-use plastic by 2023 in November 2018.
A significant commitment made by the University and Union through the campaign Single Out: 2023PlasticFree is to phase out single-use plastic everywhere, not just in catering and office spaces.
According to our guiding principles, we must achieve a net-zero carbon impact by 2030 and strive to eliminate all direct carbon emissions by 2050.
They also include a promise to gradually shift the focus of research and instruction away from the fossil fuel industry.
The University has withdrew its investment from major fossil fuel extractors Total, BP, and Shell as a result of this Climate Active Strategy (Royal Dutch Shell).
For administrative, research, and general commercial needs, a university may need to analyse data about its stakeholders, including its staff, students, alumni, and the general public.
In order to ensure that we process and keep this information fairly, legally, and securely, and that our stakeholders are aware of how their data is being used, our Data Protection Code of Practice outlines how we will comply with our legal requirements under the Data Protection Act.
The steps we have taken and will take to reduce the risk of modern slavery, human trafficking, forced and bonded labour, and labour rights violations within our organisation and supply chains are outlined in our modern slavery statement, which we distribute to all of our students, employees, suppliers, stakeholders, and the general public.
The University of Leeds conducts animal-based research for educational, health, and welfare goals for both humans and animals, as well as to get a better knowledge of the animals themselves.
It strictly adheres to the "three Rs" of replacing, reducing, and refining animal use in research and only employs animals when no other options are available.
Since 2005, we have been a proud Fairtrade university.
Along with Leeds University Union, we are passionate about promoting fair trade and sell fair trade products in all campus stores and dining facilities.
