Prior to 1970, Shevington's Catholic kids went to Standish's St. Marie's school.
The initial building phase of St. Bernadette's school on Church Lane was finished in 1970.
On January 7th, 1971, St. Bernadette's new school began classes with Miss Ratcliffe as the new headmistress.
When the second half of the building was finished in 1974, Shevington no longer belonged to Lancashire County but to Wigan Metro.
Sadly, only half of the third phase was finished because construction was not begun in time to prevent the budget cuts to education.
In 1996, the school's layout remained the same.
Additional construction work and the addition of more classrooms have now taken done.
The first Lollipop Lady at the school was Mrs. M. Lathom.
The Pre-school Starter Group, which was established in 1991 to introduce our 3- and 4-year-old kids to school life, was another innovation.
After 24 years of devotion to the school, Miss Ratcliffe sadly announced her retirement in 1994, much to the sadness of both the staff and the students.
St. Bernadette's welcomed Mr. J. Hanley, our current Headteacher, in January 2009.
