Mary Anne Patrick, who had inherited land at Edgeside, believed that the neighbourhood kids needed a place to attend school. Most of their parents worked in the felt and cotton mills near Whitewell Brook and Shaw Clough, in Scout's quarries, or in hillside farms and coal pits. They also worked occasionally in hillside farms. Mrs. Patrick established a fund and hired Mr. Harry Percival of Newchurch, a local architect. Mrs. Patrick lay the cornerstone on August 31, 1872, and Edgeside Holme National School first welcomed students on April 7, 1873. The first Sunday in May has always been the day for Sunday school "sermons" since the institution of Sunday schools on May 4, 1873. Over the years, the institution has undergone alterations and enhancements. The structure was expanded in 1992, and a new hall and classroom were added. On the property next to the school, a Nursery began operations on February 6th, 1997. To better accommodate our younger students, the infant classroom underwent renovations that were finished in 1998. To further serve our young children, the Nursery site has also been expanded to include a specialised Foundation Stage facility. Most recently, we added a new Year 6 classroom to our recent Key Stage 2 site expansion. Due to receiving a 30,000 Sport England Grant, an outdoor multi-sports facility was constructed on the playground for Key Stage 2.
