When the Islington market was situated directly to its north, a large portion of Rotherfield Street was constructed in the 1840s.
An all-age school was built at Shepperton Road in 1875, followed by Ecclesbourne Road in 1884, and Rotherfield Street in 1898 as a result of the 1870 Education Act.
The school's official opening date is August 22, 1898.
A significant reorganisation of the three schools in east Canonbury took place in 1932.
The three schools in East Canonbury were all converted into primary schools, and Queen's Head Street School provided secondary education (later Islington Green, COLI).
What is now outer London had been created throughout the interwar period, and the tube lines had been expanded to serve it.
Norfolk saw a lot of bombing during the war, and between 1941 and 1943, children were evacuated there.
Due to their severe damage, two homes at 41 and 43 Rotherfield Street were removed and the space used to expand the Rotherfield playground.
Midway through the 1950s, Rotherfield Court and Walkinshaw Court were constructed.
The school building was extended at the back in 1967, therefore the additional playground area was desperately needed.
The infant school staff room, which is now a part of the library, was situated in the addition.
The ILEA was established to assume the LCC's responsibility for education after it was abolished in 1965.
The kitchen, which was on the ground floor, was shut down by the ILEA because to budget constraints in the 1980s.
The Newington Green School prepared the lunches.
This was changed barely ten years ago when the elegant structure that is now utilised for dining took the place of the outdoor restrooms.
The ILEA was replaced by London Boroughs in 1990, and the next year a new roof was required.
During the building's evacuation, children were provided with shelter.
Recent construction projects that were necessary for security and safety included the fire escape and the new reception room, in addition to the Dining Hall structure.
The removal of the outdoor restrooms made it possible to instal an edible garden, which substantially enhances the visual amenity and offers an important educational resource.
The school was granted access to the open space in front of Rotherfield Court during the day in 2012.
The two Rotherfield schools were combined to form Rotherfield Primary School in 1999, marking the end of the reorganisation process.
Additionally, a single staff team that has the flexibility to transition from one age group to another has educational advantages.
