From the The Richard Pate School
The Pate's Grammar School Foundation, a nonprofit that dates back to the 16th century, established the Richard Pate School in 1946. The school was moved from the heart of Cheltenham in 1987 to a fantastic 11.5-acre location on the southern edge of the community. One of the most important people in Gloucester in the sixteenth century was Richard Pate, who was described as "a very excellent and compassionate man." He most likely was born in Gloucester and eventually resided in Cheltenham. As a commissioner for Henry VIII and Edward VI, he acquired a sizable amount of property, which he bought after examining the holdings of the local religious institutions. He was accepted to Lincoln's Inn in 1541 and later admitted to the bar. He served as Recorder of Gloucester from 1561 until his death and frequently represented Gloucester in Parliament. Richard Pate founded the Pate's Grammar School Foundation in 1586. He passed away on October 29, 1588, at the age of 73, and was laid to rest in Gloucester Cathedral's south transept.
