As part of our approach to SMSC, we also cover British Values and help our students get ready for life in contemporary Britain.
The principles outlined as being British, in our opinion, are principles we would deem crucial in any community; they are not exclusively British.
However, if we dissect the criteria for teaching British Values, we can find that much of its substance corresponds to what we value in a contemporary culture.
The atmosphere of tolerance and caring is created by children themselves, and this is something to be appreciated because our youngsters are particularly tolerant.
Encourage students to respect English civil and criminal law and to be able to discriminate between right and wrong.
Promote respect for others while keeping in mind the Equality Act of 2010's list of protected traits.
It might be a challenging undertaking to explain British values to youngsters who are performing at the P1–P3 level and to teach them.
However, when we examine what is really meant by "British Values," we see that they are just basic Human Values that apply to all societies and promote tolerance, justice, and respect.
We must carefully evaluate how we tackle this work for children who learn best through a sensory approach to learning. We can pick out some of the principles and be certain that they are already ingrained in our curriculum and are a part of all we do.
For instance, our very ethos includes traits like self-awareness, self-esteem, and self-confidence.
Equally, we promote students' understanding of right and wrong via our curriculum and all we do. This can be done by providing examples from real-world situations, literature, theatre, and games.
For children whose behaviour can be difficult due to their disabilities, we can model appropriate behaviour and use teaching methods that include strategies for reducing anxiety, which can be a trigger for socially unacceptable behaviour. We see communication as the key to allowing children to have a voice, to be able to express an opinion, to know they are heard, and to be listened to.
We can give students the chance to experience firsthand public institutions and services like the police, fire, and ambulance service through our themes and special days.
We celebrate a variety of ethnic traditions since our school is multicultural.
To sum up, teaching British values is important to our ethos and all we do. We may achieve our goals in different ways than our mainstream counterparts, but they are always just as significant and impactful.
We achieve our goals through thoughtfully planned, original activities that are tailored to the requirements of all of our students.
