From the Nishkam High School
Together with our partners, Nishkam School Trust is dedicated to offering education that will improve the hopes, aspirations, and academic performance of local youth. This will be accomplished by putting into practise the Nishkam Education Vision, which was developed after more than 30 years of working with children in a socially underprivileged area of the city. For the past ten years, we have been collaborating with the government to figure out how to build the school that our neighbourhood has long desired. Over this time, the Nishkam method of education has changed, and the successful delivery of educational services is a result. Additionally, this has entailed supporting initiatives at the University of Birmingham as well as initiatives and institutions of higher learning abroad. We are committed to serving the inner city deprived area of Handsworth by rejuvenating dilapidated buildings to use as premises, and by forging partnerships with organisations that share our vision, to motivate and inspire the community. The Handsworth community, located in a socially depressed region, has grown since the middle of the 1970s and is committed to spirituality and selfless service (nishkam sewa). This was initially accomplished by constructing a Sikh house of worship (Gurudwara), which has grown to become the biggest in Europe. This school project is building on over 30 years of a community's remarkable self-reliance within an area of high unemployment and urban deprivation, in forging local community well-being and regeneration. The Gurudwara provides up to 25,000 free hot meals every week for everyone on a purely voluntary basis and with community donations.
