We use a theme-based approach to teach both history and geography. Our unit topics incorporate both subjects. Our School and Local Area, Communication, The UK, Heroes, and Dragons are some of the current KS1 themes. The Romans in Britain, Extreme Earth, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, The Anglo Saxons and Vikings, and World Wars 1 and 2 are some of the themes we cover in KS2. We work on some themes as whole-school initiatives, using artefacts and practical applications to improve learning. We provide the kids with as many hands-on learning opportunities as we can by inviting visitors into the classroom, taking field trips, and hosting workshops as part of our humanities curriculum. A time traveller from the 17th century and Guy Fawkes himself visited us! The kids recently went to Eden Camp to study about the World Wars, Pontefract Castle to learn about the Great Fire of London, the National Emergency Services Museum to learn about the Great Fire of London, and the National Coal Mining Museum to learn about mining and our local area.
