From the Maryvale Catholic Primary School
Maryvale is a Catholic school where children are educated from the age of 3 to 11 in a caring, supportive and encouraging environment where all aspects of their development: spiritual, moral, emotional, physical, social, personal, cultural, and of course academic; are nurtured and can flourish. One of the nation's oldest Catholic elementary schools is Maryvale. The Sisters of Mercy constructed the school on its current location in 1881 with the intention of serving both the local Catholic households and the children in the orphanage. Prior to this time, a school had already been formed within the orphanage. The Diocesan Centre for Catechesis is presently housed in the former orphanage, which was shut down in 1980. At Maryvale, there is a long history of Catholicism. The parish was founded in 1669, but there may have been a Saxon church here before that. Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman, who was recently beatified, previously lived in Maryvale House, giving the neighbourhood its name of "Maryvale." In the mansion, the initial Oscott Seminary was also established. Children and young people are the school's top priority, and Maryvale Catholic Primary School expects all employees, volunteers, and guests to share this commitment.
