The beginning of our Endowed School can be traced back to 1688, when Richard Wildbore of KC left the Rector and the Overseers of the Poor an endowment of 5 per year to be paid to them specifically for them to appoint a qualified person to teach eight boys of the poorest parents in the Parish to write.
The establishment of two charity schools on Bridge Street comes next in the narrative.
First, in 1727, Reverend William Law established a school to provide "complete apparel" and an education for 14 (later 18) needy girls from King's Cliffe.
Then, in 1745, Mrs. Elizabeth Hutcheson, a widow, established a school for the "full clothing" and education of 18 (later 20) needy boys from King's Cliffe. Later, she purchased a home for the schoolmaster and constructed a school next to it; today, these structures can be seen on the left side of Bridge Street.
The Reverend Miles Joseph Berkeley established one such private school in the early months of 1838.
Due to Berkeley's renown, specimens from all over the world, including those collected by Charles Darwin on his journey on "The Beagle," which arrived in England in 1836, were given to him for identification.
Berkeley's research in 1845 enabled him to pinpoint the origin of the potato blight that devastated Ireland and portions of England in 1845 and 1846 and resulted in a dreadful famine.
Berkeley collected more than 10,000 specimens in all, 6,000 of which were brand-new fungus species, and donated them to the royal Botanic Gardens in Kew in 1879.
Berkeley received two honours: the Royal Society's Gold Medal in 1863 and a 100-dollar Civil List Pension in 1867 for his contributions to botany and plant diseases.
The Trustees of the Law & Hutcheson Charity Schools in Bridge Street were compelled to search for other, larger properties that could be transformed into a school big enough to house all the King's Cliffe eligible kids as a result.
Early in the 1870s, the Law & Hutcheson Trustees decided that the former residence and school of Reverend Berkeley on Park Street was a desirable option. They bought the property and expanded and modified it to provide separate classrooms for boys and girls.
On January 13th, 1873, The Endowed School was inaugurated.
We moved into our new school, which was partially sponsored by the foundation Trust, in February 2017.
