The Wotton-under-Edge Foundation Deed Free Grammar School was sealed with Katharine's personal seal which showed St John holding a lamb and has the Latin inscription 'Sigilla domus scolarii de Woton sub egge'. (The Wotton-under-Edge School House's seal) This seal is imprinted on our awards as well as on unique badges that some School members wear. The Berkeley coat of arms is used as the crest on the blazers. It is unknown when the spelling of the school name officially changed to Katharine. There are other historical spellings of Katharine, including Kitherina and Katheryn. The historic school buildings at School Lane, Wotton-under-Edge, were constructed in 1726 and later added to in various ways. Church Mill was purchased in 1908, not long after the school became coed. The Post Office rented Carlton House following the Second World War (1939–1945). The construction of a new structure for 350 students on the current Kingswood Road site began in 1961, and the school moved into it in January 1963 after vacating its Wotton location. The erection of the first phase of extensions to the Kingswood Road buildings began in March 1972, and the extensions were completed for the start of the Autumn Term 1973, when Katharine Lady Berkeley's re-opened as a comprehensive school for 830 pupils, marking the end of selection of boys and girls at the age of 11+ for the two separate secondary schools in Wotton. At the end of August 1973, Wotton Secondary School was formally shut down. The school received Academy status in August 2011 and is now an independent state institution that receives funding directly from the Department of Education.
