The Baptist School, founded in 1718, was Collingham's earliest educational institution. The youngsters received reading and writing instruction as well as instruction in Christian religious doctrine. A new school, billed as "mixed," was constructed on Baptist Lane in 1865, but it solely housed female students. In South Collingham, construction on a girls' school began in 1839. Collingham Girls' School, despite its name, was a mixed-gender institution that by the 1880s was so crowded that the boys were transferred to a space behind the Methodist church used by the Wesleyan School. Boys' and girls' schools were shut down in 1962, and in January 1963, students moved to the brand-new "John Blow Primary School." The school has the name of a masterful composer, organist, and Master of the King's Music who was born in North Collingham's historic Manor House in 1648.
