Foundational Skills: Staff understand that reading is the gateway to the curriculum. Effective teaching in early years ensures children develop their phonics knowledge well.
Success of the Curriculum: Leaders have designed a curriculum that enables pupils to develop their knowledge well. Pupils enjoy learning and value the wide range of subjects they study.
Areas Needing Improvement: Further up the school, the curriculum to support writing is not as ambitious as it could be. Some stronger writers are not reaching the higher standards that they could.
Performance in Maths & Reading: Subject leaders have made purposeful adaptations to the curriculum to help pupils catch up on any lost learning caused by the pandemic.
Support for Falling Behind: Pupils who are behind, have a bespoke curriculum and are catching up quickly with effective additional support.
Behaviour and Attitudes: Pupils are respectful, caring, and keen to learn. There is very little low-level disruption in lessons.
Support for SEND Pupils: At the forefront of the curriculum are the needs of disadvantaged pupils and pupils with SEND. Consequently, these pupils achieve well.
Managing Bullying and Pupil Safety: Pupils say that bullying rarely happens and there is always an adult they can share any worries with. Staff are considerate and nurturing.
Promotion of Welfare and Safety: Pupils learn how to keep safe through their computing and PSHE learning. They have a strong understanding of how to stay safe online.
Parent Feedback: Nearly all parents and carers who responded to the online survey would recommend the school.
Teacher Engagement: Staff welcome the care leaders provide and their recognition of how hard staff work.
Impact on Student Progress: Staff work diligently to ensure that pupils develop the knowledge needed to read. Pupils who struggle with phonics receive effective additional support.
Teaching Staff Challenges: Teaching for a minority of pupils in parts of key stage 1 does not develop their reading knowledge as quickly as it might.

Thanks for visiting Gatehouse Primary Academy. We are a sizable primary school near the seaside that joined the "First Federation Trust" on July 1st, 2017. Primary schools in Devon make to the Multi-Academy Trust known as The First Federation. (Please visit the First Federation Trust website to view the other schools that are part of the Trust.) 317 kids are now enrolled, distributed across 12 courses. All children should be able to learn in a nurturing, secure, and engaging atmosphere, which is our goal. Each kid receives support and encouragement to perform their best, participate in a variety of possibilities, and create positive memories of their time spent in school. The inspiring environment and our gifted staff of instructors love what they do, which makes learning enjoyable and elevates standards. We also have the good fortune to add our very own Forest School and boast a great amount of outside area. Since our last Ofsted report, a lot has changed, and we encourage visitors. Please get in touch with us if you'd like a guided tour and answers to any questions you might have so you can see for yourself.
