From the The Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy
The Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy's goal is to help students with special needs who are horse-motivated interact with people more effectively and exercise more appropriate control over their own lives. Our approach is around using horses to help young people learn and grow. Since the establishment of the organisation in 1976, it has been the goal of The Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy. As a specialised independent provider, it will continue to be our mission and our distinctive offering. The FCRT uses young people's enthusiasm for horses as a tool to foster teamwork, communication, and focus. The FCRT specialises in working with young people from underprivileged inner city regions as well as those with complex physical disabilities, learning challenges, and other disabilities. People who find it difficult to advance in school or whose educational needs cannot be satisfied in traditional colleges can benefit from further education by enrolling in a residential Further Education Through Horsemastership (FETH) course. The inclusivity, warmth, smell, movement, routine, and requirements of horses are used to teach and learn about literacy, numeracy, communication, independent travel, money management, and social skills. Strong ties to the local community and work experience placements give students chances to apply new skills to advance to independent employment and independence that would not otherwise be achievable.
