Miss Patteson developed a one-room voluntary school in 1844. Although the average attendance was roughly 41, it could fit 64 kids. There were 18 males and 26 girls according to documents in 1846; the guys may not have been there because they were working. Elm Cottage and the general store, which were located near to the school, were destroyed by fire in 1944. This made it possible to set up a dining area, which later evolved into a canteen.

The need for a new school was acknowledged in 1961, and by 1962, site talks were advanced. The decision to finally approve the construction of a new school for kids in Talaton, Devon, wasn't made until October 1965. The work, however, did not begin until October 1966 and was not finished on schedule. An announcement that Talaton School would close and move its students to Feniton was made in 1970.
