From the Blackheath Preparatory School
As a division of Christ's College, a senior boarding school founded as a boys' academy in 1823, Blackheath Nursery and Pre-Prep debuted in September 1996.
The majority of the students in the 1990s were from Africa and the Far East.
Although a few day students did attend, it was not acknowledged as a school for Blackheath area kids.
The Nursery and Pre-Prep were filled by 1998.
Christ's College was shut down in May 1998 when the governors determined that the senior school was no longer financially feasible.
The school's future stability and success depended on its ability to develop into a selective coed, autonomous day preparatory school with a solid reputation for exceptional pastoral care.
Mrs. Elizabeth Cartwright, a former principal of Blackheath High Junior School, was chosen to oversee the following phase and build the Prep school for children aged 7+ to 11.
After Mrs. Penelope Thompson took over as head in September 2006, the school only got better.
In 2011, the school's name was changed to Blackheath Preparatory School in writing.
After Mrs. Thompson retired in March 2019, Mrs. Clare Dawe was named Acting Head.
To continue Mrs. Thompson's outstanding work and move the school forward, the Governors have now started the hiring and selection process for a new Head.
The School has expanded via the creative renovation of historic structures and the construction of new ones, most notably the addition of a multipurpose hall in 2006 and an expanded dining hall and music suite in 2007.
To further improve the amenities, plans are being made to build a sports hall in the future.
Our student population has increased from 168 in 1998 to just about 400 in the present.
