An Account of Benthal Since its founding in 1878, Benthal Primary School has had a lengthy and interesting history. Currently, Benthal Primary School is located in what was once a brick field in 1868. The majority of the bricks used to construct dwellings in the region were produced here. When Benthal School initially started operating in 1876, it was known as Rendalsham Road School and was constructed using the existing brick field clay. In 1903, the institution's name was changed to Benthal Road School. On the evening of September 19, 1940, a high explosive bomb dropped during World War II struck the school. The school was reconstructed in 1949 under the name Benthal Junior School after it was extensively damaged and had to close. Six weeks before the fiscal year came to an end, the new school's design was completed. A huge central roof light provided ample lighting for each class. The construction of a new infant school, which later evolved into a junior school, took place in 1966. Although the two structures are independent, they are connected by a connecting corridor. The first school constructed by Paul Maas, who drew influence from caverns and tents for the cosy structures and arches, was Benthal. On September 1st, 2006, the separate Junior and Infants Schools merged into a single primary school.
