Leading businesspeople in Newcastle established the "Newcastle Public Day School Company Limited" and acquired Eslington Tower in 1885. To establish a new school on the property, they invited Mr. Tarver, who was then the Headmaster of Gateshead High School for Boys. The school's current colours, "Black and Gold," were established in 1892. The first scholarship awarded by NPS was for 50 students to attend Durham School in 1897. According to the letter from Durham, the youngster had created "work creditable to a boy of 17." NPS has earned a reputation for obtaining scholarships over the years, a history we are proud to uphold. At NPS' 100th birthday celebration in 1985, Cardinal Basil Hume, one of our most illustrious Old Boys, cut the cake. He was a student there in the 1930s. After many years of being privately owned, retiring Head Teachers Mr. H. H. Nayler and Mr. W. A. S. Odgen wanted to make sure the school's traditions would be upheld. They established the "Newcastle Preparatory Institution Trust Limited" and gave this new business ownership of the school. On September 22, 1964, the company obtained charity status. Please don't hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any questions regarding NPS's past or interesting anecdotes from your time there as a teacher, student, or parent. Soon, a new "History of NPS" pamphlet will be accessible. NPS is a forward-thinking institution, so it never remains still. NPS maintains its commitment to offering the finest in primary education with the addition of new tools, instructional strategies, learning opportunities, and a wide variety of excursions and activities.
