Harry Webb, a local who committed his life to bettering the lives of young people in Birmingham, created the Stonehouse Gang in 1938. As a frequent visitor to juvenile court as a news reporter, Harry came to the conclusion that many of the young offenders weren't evil; they just needed something to do and someone to believe in them.
With the adage "Better to curse the darkness than light a lamp," Harry started The Stonehouse Gang with a few other young men in a hut on Stonehouse Hill in an effort to make a difference. Under Harry's brilliant leadership and rapid expansion, The Gang became a model for several youth organisations both in the UK and overseas.
The Gang now serves local seniors and young mothers who might otherwise feel alone, as well as children as young as six. It is an important component of the Birmingham community.
In total, The Stonehouse Gang hosts close to 5000 guests a year, and demand is rising as other neighbourhood services are being reduced. But we can only keep providing this lifeline with the support of our incredible volunteers and the kind donations from both private individuals and businesses.
