From the S Pinter Youth Project
A group of parents from ethnic minority neighbourhoods in London, Hackney, and Haringey met in 1995 and decided that their kids had too few options outside of the classroom. Due to their unique religious and cultural concerns, they were unable to participate in the enjoyable and healthy activities that other kids enjoyed, such as swimming, the arts, and sports. These parents decided to do the following with the children's charity they established: Give children who are economically underprivileged and socially isolated in their community new chances that will enable them to flourish intellectually, physically, emotionally, and socially. Priority would be given to people from dysfunctional homes, crowded housing, recent immigrants, and people with special needs or impairments. Offer a comprehensive service with a focus on equality and friendliness for all kids, regardless of their abilities. We will accept and integrate kids with mild to severe physical, emotional, mental, learning, behavioural, or other special needs. By providing high-quality, innovative after-school programmes that are open to all students and keep them engaged in positive, constructive activities at all times, we can lessen anti-social or criminal behaviour. In order to ensure that we are open to everyone, we include kids from different backgrounds and nationalities and waive fees for kids who are struggling financially. This helps to prevent social isolation. to provide kids the chance to succeed in different endeavours, to extend their horizons, to provide them with new chances, and with the mentoring assistance of the Youth Workers. The S Pinter Youth Project is the only place some Hackney children feel welcomed for who they are. They can succeed in an environment where they are valued.
