From the Mary Elton Childcare Provision
In 1982, our school was constructed.
Our name comes from Mary Elton, a descendant of the Clevedon Court Elton family.
Mary was a Victorian benefactor who took a special interest in Clevedon's children's education.
Between the ages of four and eleven, we educate both boys and girls.
We also have a 1998-opened school library and a computer lab that can accommodate 30 students.
The school hall is quite huge.
The school's expansive grounds offer great opportunities for outdoor recreation and environmental education, as well as areas for the kids to engage in independent play during supervised lunch and recess periods.
The fifth baronet, The Reverend Sir Abraham Elton, had a second wife named Mary (17551842).
Clevedon was created by Mary and Sir Abraham as a coastal resort.
These and other notable local churches and buildings were sketched by Mary, who later had them engraved for lithographs.
In 1834, she oversaw the construction of the first parish school (near the present fire station).
Mary, dowager Lady Elton, lived in Mount Elton in Highdale Road with her sister Jane and niece Jane Euphemia beginning in 1844. (the daughter of another sister).
The property of the family friend GW Braikenridge, Claremont Hall, in Clevedon, was next door to Mount Elton.
The Mary Elton School debuted in Clevedon in 1982, and the Clevedon Mercury noted on April 9 that many Mercury readers will be aware of the long association the Elton family has had with Clevedon.
Mary Elton was in charge of constructing two schools in Clevedon.
