As Plymouth's MP in 1935, Nancy Lady Astor wished to establish a nursery for less fortunate children living close to our nursery. It is well known that from the 1920s on, Lady Astor contributed more to the cause of nursery education than any other elected politician in England.
Lady Astor supported Rachel and Margaret McMillan, the foremothers of nursery education, in their campaigns and endeavours to advance nursery education in our nation.
Lady Astor was so moved by their ideas about the ideal setting for young children to learn and experience new things that she bought 24 Hoe Street in Plymouth and had it renovated to meet their needs. The property's original features have been retained in large part thanks to sensitive modernization.
We run as a nonprofit charity trust, and our board of trustees meets frequently to support the nursery's operations. We work hard to create a welcoming, safe, and compassionate atmosphere. The children's practical and academic talents are fostered together with their social, self-confidence, independence, and individuality qualities.
They learn regard for others and excellent manners through developing interactions with other kids and adults.
We have established a bursary to improve the lives of some of your children in the city who come from difficult social and economic situations in order to comply with the terms of our charitable statutes and to respect the values of our founder.
With the nonprofit social company Get Up and Go Nursery, we have a bursary cooperation. Our scholarship supports the education of preschoolers who could use extra assistance.
