From the Freshlings Nursery
We will be a large, research-focused university that is accessible to everyone who would benefit from a University of Plymouth education. We will also provide top-notch interdisciplinary research, experiential learning, and civic engagement opportunities.
In order to improve the University's reputation and to recognise sustainability as an ingrained value in everything we do, we will modify our current fundamental strategic principles.
In terms of making contributions to the sustainability of marine and maritime environments and societies, we aspire to retain and expand upon our leadership position internationally.
In all of these areas, the University of Plymouth is unrivalled.
The University has developed a distinctive breadth of disciplinary interests in topics connected to marine and maritime ecosystems and societies since its founding as a College of Navigation in the 19th century.
Plymouth is also the top choice for health in the South-West, a focus for professional training in a system that can take advantage of the opportunities for well-being offered by the blue environment while addressing issues related to ageing populations and the health disparities in coastal communities.
Given its location, the history and priorities of its city, its state-of-the-art educational and research facilities, and its solid collaborations with local and international research organisations and businesses, the University of Plymouth is well-positioned to expand upon this foundation.
Our Strategy for Excellence is backed by a fourth enabling priority and three strategic priorities.
High level goals for each priority are presented here, and they will be developed further through an implementation plan that identifies the major work areas over a ten-year period and is backed by key performance indicators.
Over the next ten years, the plan will adapt to new situations and possibilities.
For the advantage of all, maximise new technology and digital trends.
How will we know whether our plan for excellence was effective?
a multifaceted, global institution with leadership in environmental sustainability, preserving excellence in research and instruction in marine and maritime environments and societies.
attracting, supporting, and keeping the best employees who are providing excellence while maintaining and building a critical mass in areas of research excellence.
Academic employees will be defined as research-active if at least 75% of them are.
Postgraduate taught students will make up at least 20% of the student body, as will at least 20% of the overseas students.
maintaining a vibrant network of international collaborations in the fields of research and education, staff and student exchange, and project collaboration.
A distinguishing trait will be significant relationships with top marine and maritime institutes.
Agile and innovative, willing to take calculated risks, ensuring the University is ahead of the competition in a rapidly changing environment, and dynamic and responsive to the opportunities to sustain excellence.
assisting personnel in spearheading fresh ideas and serving as proactive university ambassadors.
launching a big development drive to entice business partners and investors to our research and educational facilities and initiatives.
To complement the strategy, the university will create an implementation plan that includes staged activities over a ten-year period with predetermined key performance indicators.
The Faculties and Professional Services will talk about how to link their activities with the 2030 goals during the annual business planning process.
Teams will evaluate their current strategic priorities to determine which ones are most compatible with the new Strategy.
Your input and support has been crucial to the development of Strategy 2030 and will continue to underpin our success.
We will continue with regular updates through Staff Briefings, Vice-Chancellor video messages, open fora, discussions in the Senior Leadership Forum and through your faculty and services teams.
All people share ownership of Our Future of Excellence.
