Diverse Books and Toys: Children develop a love of books as they share stories with staff, talking about the characters. For example, children identify and describe the woodland animals found in their story and enthusiastically search for them outside.
Indoor and Outdoor Facilities: Children move freely around the rooms to explore and develop their own ideas. They develop close friendships with others. Children show great enjoyment in building homes for woodland creatures using various tools, sticks and mud. Children have ample opportunities to balance on logs, climb trees and develop their understanding of playing safely.
Forest School Sessions: Children develop curiosity about the wider world, for example, as they engage in daily forest school sessions. The forest leader is passionate about providing rich and exciting opportunities for children to explore the woodland, as well as developing their physical skills.
Activities: Children are keen to learn and show their interest in the activities provided. They develop a love of books and engage actively in art activities. Most of the time, children show high levels of engagement and motivation to learn during activities.
Skills , Knowledge and Behavior: Children make good progress across all areas of learning. They have opportunities to learn about shape, size, colour, and number throughout everyday activities. However, staff miss chances to fully engage the youngest children in outdoor learning.
Communication: Staff use electronic communications with parents to ensure information is shared effectively. Parents comment on the 'great relationships' staff have with children, and the progress their child has made since starting at the setting.
Staff Training: Staff are deployed well within the setting and constantly risk assess the environment to ensure children are safe and secure.
Welcoming and Professional Staff: Children have formed secure emotional attachments with all staff. Staff act as positive role models and provide regular opportunities for children to revisit the rules of the setting. They speak gently to children, particularly where they need more emotional support.
Safeguarding Training: The manager ensures that staff keep their child protection knowledge up to date through regular training. All staff are aware of how to identify and report any concerns they may have regarding the children. This includes wider safeguarding issues such as radicalisation.
Play and Learning Integration: Children develop their understanding of playing safely, and they grow in confidence as they access the well-resourced environment indoors and outside. Play is integrated into their learning as they make progress across different areas of development.
Transition to Primary School: Children are developing the skills and knowledge they need to be well prepared for school. They independently put on their coats and wellies, wash their hands before mealtimes, and sit and eat meals with friends.
Child Safety Management: Staff are deployed well within the setting and constantly risk assess the environment to ensure children are safe and secure.
Children's Safety and Security: Children feel secure in the nursery environment, forming secure emotional attachments with staff. They grow in confidence and independence.

From the Cherhill Preschool
In our village hall, Cherhill Preschool was established in 1978 as a sessional playgroup. After 18 months of fundraising and arduous labour, we finally moved into our own space in the Cherhill C of E School grounds in 2006. We combined with Heddington Preschool in 2019 and are now able to provide childcare at two excellent locations. The manager is in charge of the team of fully trained employees that deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage. We adhere to "The Curiosity Approach" in our environment because we think of ourselves as "an extension of home, not a watered-down school." Children have access to a wide range of educational possibilities, including hikes around the village, planting seeds, and classes on nature and the environment. In addition to running forest school sessions in the primary school's sensory garden, the preschool offers PE classes and music/singing time. We are thrilled to be able to provide full-day care for up to 27 children between the ages of 18 months and 5 years in our current facilities. Care is available year-round in both settings. To observe how much fun our kids have learning through play, we invite you to stop by and take a look around with your kid.
